Philosophy
Based on state-of-the-art education from the governing bodies of running, USA Track & Field, IAAF, and USTFCCCA we ground our workouts on exercise physiology, creativity, and common sense. We stress a comprehensive look at training, and seek to develop the love and glory of running.
We coach sprinters and distance athletes of all levels, and seek to improve running mechanics, speed, strength and endurance. We look to the well-worn paths of great athletes, and successful coaches who have influenced us, and rely on their work to continually inspire us. We base what we do on an intuitive sense of what the athlete may bear in any given workout, and develop a shared sense of responsibility with him or her. We regard this as an important training, and teaching principle.
Our approach is informed by our early years of work with children. The fundamentals of athleticism are particularly shaped by teaching young people, who must be brought along carefully, enthusiastically, and with great affection. Our model for adults is similar, and we seek to develop lifelong runners, who continually see the sport as a craft to improve upon, as well as a source of self-esteem and accomplishment.
These are things you will hear from us:
Weight training and plyometric exercises are important for injury prevention.
“Repetitions” are critical for mechanics, and form.
“Tempo” runs, or “lactate threshold” work well to develop gradual comfort over longer distance, no matter what the event.
“VO2” workouts are a must for aerobic power.
We stress rest and recovery to adapt to training stress. This includes massage, adequate sleep, and a good diet.
Flexibility, and cross training are essential for a diverse, athletic body.
Above all else, we stress a frank, honest, and open partnership between coach and athlete. It is through this relationship that all else comes to fruition, and through which setbacks are managed, and overcome.
